The Narrows Parks and Recreation Department is located on Mary Street in Narrows. This department offers a wide array of organized programs for children, youth, and adults on a year-round basis. The department is operated by a full-time director, Wayne Gautier. Wayne is assisted by a full-time assistant, Danny Dent, and many part-time employees and volunteers. The Parks and Recreation Commission consists of citizens who volunteer their time to provide program oversight and recommendations. The annual budget for the department is approximately $145,000.
The recreation program consists primarily of leagues and teams that stress the fundamentals of each sport or activity while also stressing sportsmanship and team play. Activities are primarily held at "the Annex" (formally the old Narrows High School), which has been converted into a community center and comprehensive recreation center. The facility offers an auditorium, full court gymnasium, dance/aerobic workout room with wall mirrors, and numerous activity rooms.
Outdoor Recreation Facilities
Outdoor recreation facilities include the use of one ball field and the Narrows High School football field (Ragsdale Field) through an agreement with the Giles County School Board, a practice ball field, and the the Narrows Town Park. The Town is in the preliminary stage of seeking additional recreational land to expand its recreational program. Ragsdale Field offers a lighted field ideal for use in soccer, football, and other sporting events.
The Narrows Town Park, or "The Boom", is located on five acres situated on Wolf Creek and State Route 61. Many of the locals call the park "The Boom" because loggers used to float logs down to the Mill Pond, located a small distance from the park, to be cut into boards. As the logs arrived at the pond, they banged against other logs already in the water, producing a loud boom. The area where the park is was known for the volume of the "booms" created by the logs, thus calling it "The Boom".
The parks offers a swimming area with lifegaurds, a volleyball court, two lit tennis courts, two basketball courts, a bath house with full bathroom facilities, and a variety of new playground equipment. The park is officially operational from May 1st through September 30th.
The Town Park also has two 25' X 72' picnic shelters that are available for the public to rent for family reunions, birthday parties, and other events. The schedule of fees for the rental of a shelter are as follows:
(Upper or Lower Shelter) Whole Shelter for Whole Day: $65.00 Whole Shelter for Half Day: $35.00 (Middle Shelter) Whole Shelter for Whole Day: $55.00 Whole Shelter for Half Day: $30.00 (Half day shelter rentals can be from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.)
If you are interested in reserving a shelter, please call the Town Office at 726-2423.
Camp Success Primitive Campground
Camp Success is located on State Route 68 (Princeton Lane) at the confluence of Wolf Creek and the New River. This primitive campground is eight acres of land that offers many camping sites, bank fishing, and a boat ramp. It boasts approximately 1/4 of a mile of frontage along the New River and 500 feet along Wolf Creek. Small Mouth Bass predominate as the major sports fish caught along the shore.
Camp Success is named for the Civil War Confederate Army encampment that was located near the grounds from 1862 to 1865. Confederate forces, some garrisoned at this site, successfully guarded the narrows of the New River from incursion by Union Army forces until early 1865. However, the camp won its name after a major skirmish occurred near this site on May 10, 1862 when Confederate forces under Brig. General Henry Heth held off the retreating Union forces under Lt. Col. Rutherford B. Hayes (later president of the United States), preventing Hayes' troops from passing through the Town of Narrows on their retreat to Princeton from the "Battle of Giles Court House" in nearby Pearisburg.
Mill Pond
Mill Pond is a small, two acre site located adjacent to Wolf Creek and Route 61 (Monroe Street) at the old mill dam on the edge of downtown Narrows. This pond is home to a year-round flock of Canadian Geese and a number of domestic and wild ducks. The pond offers several benches where one can sit and enjoy the scenery, feed the geese, or do a little fishing.
