History of Narrows

The Town of Narrows is proud to present the 5th Annual Narrows Kids Fishing Day sponsored by the Town of Narrows and the Giles County Sheriff's Department, in conjunction with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.  This year's event is cheduled for Saturday, May 15th at the Narrows Town Park.  This event has always proven to be huge success, with over 500 children being in attendance each year.  Every child age 15 and under is invited to attend, regardless of where they reside.  There is no charge for the event; however, we do accept donations from those who wish to give them.

The following is a list of activities offered at last year's event:

* A free "2009 Kids Fishing Day" t-shirt was given to the first 300 children entering the gates, courtesy of our friends at James Hardie Building Products.
* Approximately 150 prizes were given out throughout the day, including a Wii game system as a grand prize, thanks to all of our wonderful sponsors.
* An official weigh station was on-site so that fish could be weighed and released if elected.  Trophies were presented for a variety of categories and age groups.
* Citation fish could be measured and weighed.  Citation certificates were free for the child's first fish.
* Two climbs on an artificial rock wall were provided free of charge to each participating child.
*The Narrows Volunteer Fire Department sold concession to the public in order to raise funds for their organization.  "Sparky the Fire Dog" was also on-site to visit with the children and stress fire safety.

The gates will open at 8:30, and fishing will be from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.  The prize drawings will begin at 1:00 p.m.  The stocking will take place  on Thursday, May 13th at 5:30 p.m.  Children are welcome to help!

The mission of this event is to provide the youth of our community with the feelings of excitement and satisfaction that come with an outdoor sport such as fishing while stressing the idea that there are far more fun and safe activities to participate in throughout the area than drug use.  The day is a fun, family-friendly, and low-cost way of offering the kids in our community an alternative to other detrimental activities.  For many, it is an event anticipated each year and a great way to introduce smaller children to the sport of fishing.

The event is organized each year by Town of Narrows staff, DGIF staff, NVFD members, and volunteers from the community.  This year, we are pleased to have the Giles County Sheriff's Department as a co-sponsor of the event.  The 2010 Narrows Kids Fishing Day Planning Committee members are:

Jessie Parsell(Town of Narrows)
Steve Lucas
Gary Dickerson (Narrows Volunteer Fire Department)
Joe Shanks (Giles County Sheriff's Department)
Josh Butler (Narrows Volunteer Fire Department)
Ernest Long (Narrows Volunteer Fire Department)
Charlie Mullins  (Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries)
Sammy Marshall
Mathew Hodge (Narrows Volunteer Fire Department)

The planning committee members would like to thank each and every individual, organization, and business that supports this event each year.  Without the kind and generous donations of the sponsors, the event would never be possible.

If you would like to learn more about this event, become a volunteer, or make a donation, please call Jessie at the Narrows Town Office at 540-726-2423.  You may also obtain further information via email to

2010 Volunteers for Communities Program

On February 28th, the Town of Narrows will be welcoming 27 students from Holy Cross and Boston College.  The students will be visiting Narrows through a program called Volunteers for Communities.  The program, which the Town has participated in for several years now, is an alternative spring break program where students are matched with rural communities through the SERCAP organization.  While here, the students will be doing several different community service projects for the Town, community organizations, and individuals.

Some of the projects planned for this year are assisting a few of the local churches with some maintenance tasks, helping a few citizens with odd jobs around there homes, assisting at the local daycare centers, building picnic tables for the town park, painting at the town library, and many other things.  The program is staffed primarily with volunteers from the community and organized by Town staff.  We would like to express our sincere thanks to each and every person who work so hard each year to make the week a success for all involved.

If you would like to learn more about this program, please call Jessie at the Narrows Town Office at 540-726-2423.  Also, if you would like to volunteer to help out during the week or have an idea for a project, we would be glad to talk with you.
